Omphalology

Just as in economics textbooks the word "widget" refers to a product whose nature is irrelevant to the present point and therefore unspecified, so in writing about a medical career, a physician whose specialty need not be identified has been facetiously called an "omphalologist". Omphalos is Greek for "navel", and omphalology would be the medical specialty that treats thereof, if such a thing existed.

The original spelling of the Greek word is:

<math>{\rm OM}\Phi{\rm A}\Lambda{\rm O}\Sigma.\quad</math>
