Olyphant, Pennsylvania

Olyphant is a borough located in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 4,978.

Geography Olyphant is located at 41°27'45" North, 75°35'44" West (41.462630, -75.595617)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 14.1 km² (5.4 mi²). 13.9 km² (5.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.10% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,978 people, 2,197 households, and 1,348 families residing in the borough. The population density is 357.3/km² (925.3/mi²). There are 2,381 housing units at an average density of 170.9/km² (442.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 98.49% White, 0.46% African American, 0.02% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. 0.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,197 households out of which 25.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.1% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.6% are non-families. 35.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the borough the population is spread out with 20.8% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.5 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $32,721, and the median income for a family is $45,091. Males have a median income of $30,647 versus $24,825 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $17,049. 11.3% of the population and 7.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.2% are under the age of 18 and 24.2% are 65 or older.
