Okmulgee County, Oklahoma

Okmulgee County is a county located in the U.S. State of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 39,685. Its county seat is Okmulgee6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,819 km² (702 mi²). 1,805 km² (697 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.76% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 39,685 people, 15,300 households, and 10,694 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (57/mi²). There are 17,316 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 69.73% White, 10.20% African American, 12.85% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 6.40% from two or more races. 1.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 15,300 households out of which 32.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.80% are married couples living together, 13.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.10% are non-families. 27.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.90% under the age of 18, 9.50% from 18 to 24, 25.30% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 15.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 95.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,652, and the median income for a family is $33,987. Males have a median income of $29,935 versus $20,861 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,065. 18.90% of the population and 14.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.90% are under the age of 18 and 15.50% are 65 or older.
