Oil City, Pennsylvania

Oil City is a city located in Venango County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,504.

Geography Oil City is located at 41°25'42" North, 79°42'26" West (41.428280, -79.707327)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.3 km² (4.7 mi²). 11.7 km² (4.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.65% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 11,504 people, 4,762 households, and 2,981 families residing in the city. The population density is 984.9/km² (2,548.4/mi²). There are 5,276 housing units at an average density of 451.7/km² (1,168.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.84% White, 0.89% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. 0.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,762 households out of which 30.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.8% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.4% are non-families. 32.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,060, and the median income for a family is $36,149. Males have a median income of $30,072 versus $19,697 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,696. 19.0% of the population and 16.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.3% are under the age of 18 and 12.4% are 65 or older.
