Objective One

Objective 1 regions are officially designated places within the European Union where the per capita GDP is less than 75% of that of the wider community, as well as certain thinly populated or outlying areas. The recognition of Objective One status is usually accompanied by grants in aid from the EEC. Achievement of Objective One status is frequently the subject of much political debate and manouevring.
