Obion County, Tennessee

Obion County is a county located in the U.S. State of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 32,450. Its county seat is Union City6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,438 km² (555 mi²). 1,411 km² (545 mi²) of it is land and 27 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.88% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 32,450 people, 13,182 households, and 9,398 families residing in the county. The population density is 23/km² (60/mi²). There are 14,489 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (27/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 88.16% White, 9.85% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.91% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 1.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,182 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.40% are married couples living together, 11.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.70% are non-families. 25.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.40% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 93.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,764, and the median income for a family is $40,533. Males have a median income of $32,963 versus $20,032 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,409. 13.30% of the population and 10.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.60% are under the age of 18 and 15.10% are 65 or older.
