Oakland, Maryland

Oakland is a town in, and the county seat of Garrett County, Maryland, in the extreme western part of the U.S. state of Maryland. Oakland was incorporated in 1862. Its population in the 2000 census was 1,930.

Geography Oakland is located at 39°24'38" North, 79°24'16" West (39.410480, -79.404380)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²). 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.47% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,930 people, 787 households, and 447 families residing in the town. The population density is 353.2/km² (915.7/mi²). There are 918 housing units at an average density of 168.0/km² (435.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.13% White, 0.73% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.26% from two or more races. 0.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 787 households out of which 25.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.6% are married couples living together, 9.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.1% are non-families. 38.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.09 and the average family size is 2.75.

In the town the population is spread out with 18.5% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 24.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 85.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $26,728, and the median income for a family is $38,750. Males have a median income of $29,625 versus $21,542 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,872. 19.0% of the population and 13.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.9% are under the age of 18 and 21.0% are 65 or older.
