Oakes is a city located in Dickey County, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,979.

Geography Oakes is located at 46°8'14" North, 98°5'23" West (46.137249, -98.089686)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.3 km² (1.6 mi²). 4.3 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,979 people, 828 households, and 495 families residing in the city. The population density is 463.1/km² (1,203.0/mi²). There are 908 housing units at an average density of 212.5/km² (552.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.27% White, 0.00% African American, 0.20% Native American, 1.01% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.01% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 2.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 828 households out of which 27.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% are married couples living together, 5.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% are non-families. 36.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 23.0% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 24.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,263, and the median income for a family is $39,625. Males have a median income of $29,135 versus $15,611 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,138. 8.8% of the population and 6.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.4% are under the age of 18 and 11.0% are 65 or older.
