According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²). 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 51.88% water.
Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,737 people, 3,188 households, and 1,511 families residing in the village. The population density is 3,378.1/km² (8,749.1/mi²). There are 3,288 housing units at an average density of 1,648.7/km² (4,270.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 63.81% White, 26.33% African American, 0.21% Native American, 2.42% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 2.66% from other races, and 4.56% from two or more races. 8.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,188 households out of which 20.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.0% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 52.6% are non-families. 42.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.10 and the average family size is 2.93.
In the village the population is spread out with 19.0% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 36.2% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who are 65 years of age or older.
