Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,136 people, 1,226 households, and 886 families residing in the town. The population density is 249.1/km² (645.8/mi²). There are 1,406 housing units at an average density of 111.7/km² (289.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 75.89% White, 21.56% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.31% from other races, and 0.41% from two or more races. 2.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,226 households out of which 33.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.1% are married couples living together, 14.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.7% are non-families. 24.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
