Niles Township, Michigan

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 99.7 km² (38.5 mi²). 97.6 km² (37.7 mi²) of it is land and 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.05% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 13,325 people, 5,252 households, and 3,744 families residing in the township. The population density is 136.5/km² (353.5/mi²). There are 5,522 housing units at an average density of 56.6/km² (146.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 93.30% White, 3.03% African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.83% from other races, and 1.76% from two or more races. 1.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,252 households out of which 30.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.5% are married couples living together, 11.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% are non-families. 23.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the township the population is spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.8 males.
