Niihau is the smallest of the inhabited islands of
Hawaii. The entire island is owned by the Robinson family who purchased it from the Kingdom of Hawaii for $10,000. The island contains a few hundred employees of the ranch owned by the Robinsons, and persons other than employees, their families, and government officials are forbidden. Niihau is the only one of the Hawaiian islands on which the
Hawaiian language is the main form of communications.
Niihau is also known as the "Forbidden Island".
