NIMBY

NIMBY, acronym for Not In My Back Yard. Often used to refer to the behaviour of people usually living in pleasant or rural areas when proposals to build in their area are put forward - and even more so if the people who have this view are powerful and able to counter the proposals effectively, such as rich landowners, MPs etc. See also drawbridge mentality.
