Newport, Oregon

Newport is a city located in Lincoln County, Oregon. The name of this city dates back to the establishment of a post office on July 2, 1868, and may be in memory of Newport, Rhode Island. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,532. It is the county seat of Lincoln County6.

Geography Newport is located at 44°38'16" North, 124°3'17" West (44.637729, -124.054835)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 27.0 km² (10.4 mi²). 23.0 km² (8.9 mi²) of it is land and 4.0 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 14.94% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 9,532 people, 4,112 households, and 2,495 families residing in the city. The population density is 414.5/km² (1,073.1/mi²). There are 5,034 housing units at an average density of 218.9/km² (566.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 88.56% White, 0.45% African American, 2.15% Native American, 1.72% Asian, 0.21% Pacific Islander, 3.86% from other races, and 3.04% from two or more races. 8.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,112 households out of which 26.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.6% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.77.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.3% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,996, and the median income for a family is $36,682. Males have a median income of $31,416 versus $26,582 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,580. 14.4% of the population and 12.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.1% are under the age of 18 and 8.2% are 65 or older.
