Newell is a borough located in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 551.

Geography Newell is located at 40°4'29" North, 79°53'49" West (40.074689, -79.896984)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²). 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 19.48% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 551 people, 222 households, and 162 families residing in the borough. The population density is 343.1/km² (892.6/mi²). There are 232 housing units at an average density of 144.5/km² (375.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 99.82% White, 0.18% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 222 households out of which 26.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% are married couples living together, 14.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.0% are non-families. 25.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the borough the population is spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 21.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 91.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.3 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $33,988, and the median income for a family is $41,477. Males have a median income of $38,611 versus $20,556 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $18,592. 5.7% of the population and 3.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 7.1% are under the age of 18 and 4.8% are 65 or older.
