Newberry County is a county located in the U.S. State of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 36,108. Its county seat is Newberry6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,676 km² (647 mi²). 1,634 km² (631 mi²) of it is land and 43 km² (17 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.55% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 36,108 people, 14,026 households, and 9,804 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (57/mi²). There are 16,805 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (27/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 64.02% White, 33.12% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 1.30% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 4.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,026 households out of which 30.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.20% are married couples living together, 16.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.10% are non-families. 26.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.10% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 14.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 93.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,867, and the median income for a family is $40,580. Males have a median income of $29,871 versus $21,274 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,045. 17.00% of the population and 13.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 23.80% are under the age of 18 and 16.00% are 65 or older.
