Newberg, Oregon

Newberg is a town located in Yamhill County, Oregon. A tradition holds that this town was named by its first postmaster, Sebastian Brutscher, for his former hometown of Neuberg in Germany. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 18,064.

Geography Newberg is located at 45°18'18" North, 122°58'2" West (45.304950, -122.967360)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.0 km² (5.0 mi²). 13.0 km² (5.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 18,064 people, 6,099 households, and 4,348 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,389.4/km² (3,599.4/mi²). There are 6,435 housing units at an average density of 494.9/km² (1,282.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 90.49% White, 0.35% African American, 0.64% Native American, 1.04% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 5.06% from other races, and 2.24% from two or more races. 10.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,099 households out of which 40.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% are non-families. 21.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.20.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 15.0% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 16.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $44,206, and the median income for a family is $51,084. Males have a median income of $34,099 versus $23,571 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,873. 6.6% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 7.0% are under the age of 18 and 6.1% are 65 or older.
