Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 46,279 people, 19,312 households, and 12,108 families residing in the city. The population density is 914.0/km² (2,366.7/mi²). There are 20,625 housing units at an average density of 407.3/km² (1,054.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.12% White, 3.10% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 1.51% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 19,312 households out of which 30.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% are married couples living together, 13.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% are non-families. 31.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
