In 1901, the philanthropist Joseph Rowntree[?] bought 150 acres of agricultural land and built workers cottages, 12 per acre, along with a Folk Hall, a school, and a surgery. The cottages are reminiscent of the Arts and Crafts movement style, and they are now in the care of the Joseph Rowntree Memorial Trust[?]. The village became a Conservation Area in 1991.
