New Delhi (population 12 million) is the capital of India. Located in the north of the country, the city was built from 1912 to become the new capital of British India, eventually replacing Calcutta on February 10, 1911. The plan was developed by architect Edwin Lutyens.
New Delhi is served by Indira Gandhi International Airport. The first section of their metro system was opened in December 2002.
