Nevada is a city located in Story County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,658. It is the county seat of Story County6.

Geography Nevada is located at 42°1'9" North, 93°27'6" West (42.019152, -93.451775)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.9 km² (4.2 mi²). 10.8 km² (4.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.24% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,658 people, 2,716 households, and 1,787 families residing in the city. The population density is 615.0/km² (1,594.7/mi²). There are 2,882 housing units at an average density of 266.2/km² (690.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.97% White, 0.59% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 1.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,716 households out of which 33.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% are non-families. 28.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $42,527, and the median income for a family is $48,700. Males have a median income of $32,635 versus $24,680 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,392. 5.6% of the population and 3.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.4% are under the age of 18 and 3.2% are 65 or older.
