The meaning of the name has eroded as it now stands for both pop music in the Dutch language and pop music from the Netherlands of any period. So, ironically, Shocking Blue and Focus are now considered Nederpop by some, even though they scored their hits a decade before the name was introduced.
The original meaning came about because of the huge success of Doe Maar. This success helped other bands to sing in Dutch and/or get the spot light.
Aside from Doe Maar, the early eighties were good for amongst others the Frank Boeijen Groep[?], Het Goede Doel[?] and Toontje Lager[?].
