Navajo County, Arizona

Navajo County is located in the norhteastern part of the U.S. state of Arizona. As of 2000 its population was 97,470. The county seat is Holbrook.

Navajo County contains parts of the Hopi Indian Reservation, the Navajo Indian Reservation and Fort Apache Indian Reservation.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 25,795 km² (9,959 mi²). 25,779 km² (9,953 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.06% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 97,470 people, 30,043 households, and 23,073 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (10/mi²). There are 47,413 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 45.91% White, 0.88% African American, 47.74% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 3.15% from other races, and 1.94% from two or more races. 8.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 30,043 households out of which 40.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.50% are married couples living together, 16.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.20% are non-families. 19.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.17 and the average family size is 3.68.

In the county the population is spread out with 35.40% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 25.30% from 25 to 44, 20.40% from 45 to 64, and 10.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 98.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,569, and the median income for a family is $32,409. Males have a median income of $30,509 versus $21,621 for females. The per capita income for the county is $11,609. 29.50% of the population and 23.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 36.60% are under the age of 18 and 20.30% are 65 or older.
