Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 54,260 people, 15,018 households, and 11,804 families residing in the city. The population density is 2,834.9/km² (7,343.8/mi²). There are 15,422 housing units at an average density of 805.7/km² (2,087.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 35.15% White, 5.58% African American, 0.95% Native American, 18.57% Asian, 0.88% Pacific Islander, 33.51% from other races, and 5.37% from two or more races. 59.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 15,018 households out of which 44.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% are married couples living together, 21.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.4% are non-families. 16.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.39 and the average family size is 3.79.
In the city the population is spread out with 30.1% under the age of 18, 14.0% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 15.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 102.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $29,826, and the median income for a family is $31,497. Males have a median income of $22,005 versus $20,484 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,582. 22.0% of the population and 19.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 30.2% are under the age of 18 and 12.2% are 65 or older.
