Nantucket County, Massachusetts

Nantucket County is a county located in the U.S. State of Massachusetts. It is comprised of the islands of Nantucket, Tuckernuck, and Muskeget in Massachusetts. It contains only the town of Nantucket[?]. As of 2000, the population is 9,520. Its county seat is Nantucket[?]6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 786 km² (304 mi²). 124 km² (48 mi²) of it is land and 663 km² (256 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 84.25% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 9,520 people, 3,699 households, and 2,104 families residing in the county. The population density is 77/km² (199/mi²). There are 9,210 housing units at an average density of 74/km² (193/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.85% White, 8.29% African American, 0.01% Native American, 0.64% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.60% from other races, and 1.58% from two or more races. 2.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,699 households out of which 26.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.70% are married couples living together, 8.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.10% are non-families. 29.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the county the population is spread out with 19.20% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 40.40% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 10.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 105.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $55,522, and the median income for a family is $66,786. Males have a median income of $41,116 versus $31,608 for females. The per capita income for the county is $31,314. 7.50% of the population and 3.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 2.30% are under the age of 18 and 7.10% are 65 or older.
