Nacogdoches County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 59,203. Its county seat is Nacogdoches6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,542 km² (981 mi²). 2,452 km² (947 mi²) of it is land and 90 km² (35 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.52% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 59,203 people, 22,006 households, and 14,039 families residing in the county. The population density is 24/km² (62/mi²). There are 25,051 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (26/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 75.00% White, 16.74% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 5.70% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. 11.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 22,006 households out of which 30.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.30% are married couples living together, 11.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.20% are non-families. 27.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.00% under the age of 18, 20.00% from 18 to 24, 24.70% from 25 to 44, 19.20% from 45 to 64, and 12.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 93.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,301, and the median income for a family is $38,347. Males have a median income of $29,502 versus $21,422 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,437. 23.30% of the population and 15.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.10% are under the age of 18 and 13.90% are 65 or older.
