Muskegon County, Michigan

Muskegon County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 170,200. Its county seat is Muskegon6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,780 km² (1,459 mi²). 1,319 km² (509 mi²) of it is land and 2,461 km² (950 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 65.11% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 170,200 people, 63,330 households, and 44,267 families residing in the county. The population density is 129/km² (334/mi²). There are 68,556 housing units at an average density of 52/km² (135/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 81.25% White, 14.20% African American, 0.82% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.28% from other races, and 2.01% from two or more races. 3.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 63,330 households out of which 34.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.60% are married couples living together, 13.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.10% are non-families. 25.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.50% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 98.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,008, and the median income for a family is $45,710. Males have a median income of $35,952 versus $25,430 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,967. 11.40% of the population and 8.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.00% are under the age of 18 and 8.20% are 65 or older.
