Murphy is a town located in Cherokee County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,568. It is the county seat of Cherokee County6.

Geography Murphy is located at 35°5'23" North, 84°1'48" West (35.089848, -84.029924)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.5 km² (2.5 mi²). 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.80% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,568 people, 725 households, and 440 families residing in the town. The population density is 265.5/km² (687.7/mi²). There are 819 housing units at an average density of 138.7/km² (359.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 89.60% White, 5.48% African American, 1.28% Native American, 1.34% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.15% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 2.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 725 households out of which 22.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.5% are married couples living together, 15.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% are non-families. 36.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.13 and the average family size is 2.71.

In the town the population is spread out with 20.3% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 23.2% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 24.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 87.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $24,952, and the median income for a family is $35,234. Males have a median income of $30,395 versus $16,908 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,926. 22.9% of the population and 16.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 36.2% are under the age of 18 and 21.4% are 65 or older.
