Montgomery County, Tennessee

Montgomery County is a county located in the U.S. State of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 134,768. It was named for John Montgomery, a settler who founded the city of Clarksville, Tennessee in Montgomery County. Its county seat is Clarksville6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,409 km² (544 mi²). 1,397 km² (539 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.84% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 134,768 people, 48,330 households, and 35,957 families residing in the county. The population density is 96/km² (250/mi²). There are 52,167 housing units at an average density of 37/km² (97/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 73.17% White, 19.18% African American, 0.53% Native American, 1.82% Asian, 0.21% Pacific Islander, 2.18% from other races, and 2.91% from two or more races. 5.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 48,330 households out of which 40.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.70% are married couples living together, 12.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.60% are non-families. 20.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the county, the population is spread out with 28.40% under the age of 18, 12.30% from 18 to 24, 34.30% from 25 to 44, 17.20% from 45 to 64, and 7.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 101.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,981, and the median income for a family is $43,023. Males have a median income of $30,696 versus $22,581 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,265. 10.00% of the population and 7.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.70% are under the age of 18 and 10.70% are 65 or older.
