Montgomery County, North Carolina

Montgomery County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 26,822. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada. Its county seat is Troy6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,299 km² (502 mi²). 1,273 km² (492 mi²) of it is land and 26 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.00% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 26,822 people, 9,848 households, and 7,189 families residing in the county. The population density is 21/km² (55/mi²). There are 14,145 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (29/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 69.07% White, 21.84% African American, 0.40% Native American, 1.61% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 5.75% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. 10.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,848 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.60% are married couples living together, 12.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.00% are non-families. 24.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 9.00% from 18 to 24, 28.50% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 14.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 102.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,903, and the median income for a family is $39,616. Males have a median income of $27,832 versus $21,063 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,504. 15.40% of the population and 10.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.50% are under the age of 18 and 17.80% are 65 or older.
