Montgomery County, Kentucky

Montgomery County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 22,554. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada. Its county seat is Mt. Sterling[?]6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 515 km² (199 mi²). 514 km² (199 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.11% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 22,554 people, 8,902 households, and 6,436 families residing in the county. The population density is 44/km² (114/mi²). There are 9,682 housing units at an average density of 19/km² (49/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.07% White, 3.48% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 1.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,902 households out of which 33.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.70% are married couples living together, 11.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.70% are non-families. 23.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 30.20% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,746, and the median income for a family is $36,939. Males have a median income of $31,428 versus $20,941 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,701. 15.20% of the population and 12.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.10% are under the age of 18 and 17.30% are 65 or older.
