Montgomery County, Kansas

Montgomery County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 36,252. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada. Its county seat is Independence, Kansas6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,687 km² (651 mi²). 1,671 km² (645 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.95% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 36,252 people, 14,903 households, and 9,955 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (56/mi²). There are 17,207 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (27/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 85.77% White, 6.07% African American, 3.19% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.13% from other races, and 3.34% from two or more races. 3.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,903 households out of which 29.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.00% are married couples living together, 10.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.20% are non-families. 29.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.00% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 24.70% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 18.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 93.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,997, and the median income for a family is $38,516. Males have a median income of $29,745 versus $20,179 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,421. 12.60% of the population and 9.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.80% are under the age of 18 and 10.90% are 65 or older.
