Montgomery County, Indiana

Montgomery County is a county located in the U.S. State of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 37,629. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada. The county's county seat is Crawfordsville, Indiana6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,309 km² (505 mi²). 1,307 km² (505 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.16% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 37,629 people, 14,595 households, and 10,245 families residing in the county. The population density is 29/km² (75/mi²). There are 15,678 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (31/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.77% White, 0.77% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.10% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 1.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,595 households out of which 33.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.60% are married couples living together, 8.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.80% are non-families. 25.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 9.00% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 13.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 99.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $41,297, and the median income for a family is $48,779. Males have a median income of $36,612 versus $23,010 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,938. 8.30% of the population and 6.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.20% are under the age of 18 and 7.00% are 65 or older.
