Montgomery County, Georgia

Montgomery County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 8,270. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada. The county's county seat is Mt. Vernon, Georgia[?]6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 641 km² (247 mi²). 635 km² (245 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.80% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 8,270 people, 2,919 households, and 2,063 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km² (34/mi²). There are 3,492 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 69.72% White, 27.24% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.13% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 3.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,919 households out of which 34.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.10% are married couples living together, 13.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.30% are non-families. 25.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.00% under the age of 18, 12.80% from 18 to 24, 30.20% from 25 to 44, 21.40% from 45 to 64, and 10.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 105.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,240, and the median income for a family is $38,418. Males have a median income of $27,572 versus $21,342 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,182. 19.90% of the population and 15.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.70% are under the age of 18 and 23.90% are 65 or older.
