Montcalm County, Michigan

Montcalm County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 61,266. Its county seat is Stanton6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,867 km² (721 mi²). 1,834 km² (708 mi²) of it is land and 34 km² (13 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.79% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 61,266 people, 22,079 households, and 16,183 families residing in the county. The population density is 33/km² (86/mi²). There are 25,900 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (37/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.83% White, 2.17% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 1.46% from two or more races. 2.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 22,079 households out of which 35.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.80% are married couples living together, 9.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.70% are non-families. 21.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.10% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 30.20% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 12.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 105.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $37,218, and the median income for a family is $42,823. Males have a median income of $32,635 versus $23,645 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,183. 10.90% of the population and 7.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.00% are under the age of 18 and 8.70% are 65 or older.
