Monroe Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey

Monroe Township is a township located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 27,999.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 108.9 km² (42.0 mi²). 108.6 km² (41.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.24% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 27,999 people, 12,536 households, and 8,236 families residing in the township. The population density is 257.8/km² (667.6/mi²). There are 13,259 housing units at an average density of 122.1/km² (316.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 93.31% White, 2.93% African American, 0.06% Native American, 2.34% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 2.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,536 households out of which 15.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.6% are married couples living together, 3.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% are non-families. 32.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 28.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.70.

In the township the population is spread out with 16.0% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 16.3% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 43.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 59 years. For every 100 females there are 84.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.3 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $53,306, and the median income for a family is $68,479. Males have a median income of $56,431 versus $35,857 for females. The per capita income for the township is $31,772. 3.3% of the population and 1.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 2.9% are under the age of 18 and 3.0% are 65 or older.
