Monroe County, West Virginia

Monroe County is a county located in the State of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 14,583. Its county seat is Union6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,227 km² (474 mi²). 1,226 km² (473 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.06% water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 14,583 people, 5,447 households, and 3,883 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (31/mi²). There are 7,267 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (15/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.67% White, 5.98% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.03% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 0.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,447 households out of which 29.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.80% are married couples living together, 7.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.70% are non-families. 25.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the county, the population is spread out with 20.10% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 30.30% from 25 to 44, 26.10% from 45 to 64, and 15.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 79.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 73.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,575, and the median income for a family is $35,299. Males have a median income of $25,643 versus $22,104 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,435. 16.20% of the population and 12.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.30% are under the age of 18 and 12.30% are 65 or older.
