Monroe County, Mississippi

Monroe County is a county located in the U.S. State of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 38,014. Its county seat is Aberdeen6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,000 km² (772 mi²). 1,979 km² (764 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.02% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 38,014 people, 14,603 households, and 10,660 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (50/mi²). There are 16,236 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (21/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 68.37% White, 30.77% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 0.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,603 households out of which 34.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.00% are married couples living together, 17.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.00% are non-families. 24.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.20% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 89.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,307, and the median income for a family is $36,749. Males have a median income of $30,232 versus $20,411 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,072. 17.20% of the population and 13.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.30% are under the age of 18 and 21.70% are 65 or older.
