Monosexual

A monosexual is someone who is sexually attracted to one sex only. A monosexual can be either heterosexual or homosexual. The term is fairly uncommon, mostly used in discussions of bisexuality to denote everyone other than bisexuals (with the exception of asexuals, who are sexually attracted to no-one). It is sometimes considered derogatory.

The majority of people claim to be monosexual, but the proportion of people who fit into the category depends on how one uses the word. If the term is used to mean exclusively monosexual, then according to Alfred Kinsey's studies, only 5% to 10% of people are in this group. However, the Kinsey Reports are controversial, his methodology being questioned, and they are not accepted by everyone. Still, some people think that even Kinsey's figure is too high, saying that no-one is exclusively monosexual, and that the 5% to 10% were just in denial. However, the term can be used in a non-exclusive sense, in which case the proportion would be higher. Most people believe that monosexuals are in fact the majority.
