Mississippi County, Arkansas

Mississippi County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 51,979. There are two county seats, Blytheville and Osceola.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,382 km² (920 mi²). 2,326 km² (898 mi²) of it is land and 56 km² (21 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.34% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 51,979 people, 19,349 households, and 13,911 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (58/mi²). There are 22,310 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 64.45% White, 32.70% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.07% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. 2.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 19,349 households out of which 36.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.00% are married couples living together, 17.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% are non-families. 24.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the county the population is spread out with 29.60% under the age of 18, 9.90% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 20.80% from 45 to 64, and 12.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 91.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,479, and the median income for a family is $32,648. Males have a median income of $29,645 versus $19,782 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,978. 23.00% of the population and 19.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 31.10% are under the age of 18 and 19.80% are 65 or older.
