Mio, Michigan

Mio is a town located in Oscoda County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,016. It is the county seat of Oscoda County6.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 21.0 km² (8.1 mi²). 19.3 km² (7.5 mi²) of it is land and 1.7 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.01% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,016 people, 826 households, and 537 families residing in the town. The population density is 104.3/km² (270.1/mi²). There are 1,191 housing units at an average density of 61.6/km² (159.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.83% White, 0.15% African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 2.13% from two or more races. 1.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 826 households out of which 30.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% are non-families. 28.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 92.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $26,831, and the median income for a family is $31,379. Males have a median income of $29,542 versus $20,927 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,064. 21.3% of the population and 13.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 33.3% are under the age of 18 and 13.4% are 65 or older.
