Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,481 km² (572 mi²). 1,477 km² (570 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.29% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,884 people, 1,212 households, and 789 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (5/mi²). There are 1,408 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.75% White, 0.52% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.21% from two or more races. 0.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,212 households out of which 28.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.50% are married couples living together, 5.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.90% are non-families. 32.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
