Mineola, New York

Mineola is a village located in Nassau County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 19,234. Mineola features four of the five vowels (not including y). The village applied to have the fifth vowel, U, added to its name, but the application was denied. It is the county seat of Nassau County6.

Geography Mineola is located at 40°44'50" North, 73°38'17" West (40.747188, -73.638088)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.8 km² (1.9 mi²). 4.8 km² (1.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 19,234 people, 7,473 households, and 4,954 families residing in the village. The population density is 3,992.6/km² (10,337.3/mi²). There are 7,650 housing units at an average density of 1,588.0/km² (4,111.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 86.39% White, 1.03% African American, 0.29% Native American, 4.52% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.93% from other races, and 3.79% from two or more races. 13.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,473 households out of which 27.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% are married couples living together, 9.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% are non-families. 29.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.20.

In the village the population is spread out with 20.2% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 34.1% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $60,706, and the median income for a family is $71,042. Males have a median income of $47,182 versus $37,057 for females. The per capita income for the village is $28,890. 4.2% of the population and 2.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 3.5% are under the age of 18 and 5.4% are 65 or older.
