Military decoration

A decoration, in the military sense of the word, is a prize given to a professional soldier or special unit for heroism in battle or distinguished service. Decorations received by policemen/women and fire workers can be considered in the same sense of a military decoration. Sometimes civilians can receive a civil decoration[?], and a Chivalry Order[?], another special Order, a political distiction or a special prize (i.e. Nobel Prize must not be confused with a military decoration.

Decorations are known since ancient times. Celts and Romans worn a torc, Dayaks (head-hunters]] worn and still wear tattoos, etc. Necklaces and bracelets were given during the early Middle Age, evolving in richly jewelled big necklaces, often with a pendant (commonly a medal[?]) attached.

Today a medal attached to the uniform of hanging from a ribbon (attached to the uniform around the uniform's collar), a pin[?], or simply a ribbon[?] with special colours and shape are used as decorations.
