Middle Township, New Jersey

Middle Township is a township located in Cape May County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 16,405.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 215.3 km² (83.1 mi²). 184.6 km² (71.3 mi²) of it is land and 30.6 km² (11.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 14.23% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 16,405 people, 6,009 households, and 4,218 families residing in the township. The population density is 88.9/km² (230.2/mi²). There are 7,510 housing units at an average density of 40.7/km² (105.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 85.21% White, 10.86% African American, 0.23% Native American, 1.44% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.66% from other races, and 1.58% from two or more races. 2.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,009 households out of which 31.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% are non-families. 24.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the township the population is spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.5 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $41,533, and the median income for a family is $49,030. Males have a median income of $37,531 versus $27,166 for females. The per capita income for the township is $19,805. 10.2% of the population and 8.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.5% are under the age of 18 and 10.6% are 65 or older.
