Mexia, Texas

Mexia is a city located in Limestone County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,563.

Geography Mexia is located at 31°40'54" North, 96°28'52" West (31.681734, -96.481167)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.3 km² (5.2 mi²). 13.3 km² (5.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,563 people, 2,427 households, and 1,660 families residing in the city. The population density is 492.0/km² (1,273.9/mi²). There are 2,750 housing units at an average density of 206.2/km² (533.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 55.90% White, 31.68% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 10.67% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. 17.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,427 households out of which 36.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.7% are married couples living together, 19.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.6% are non-families. 28.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.21.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.1% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 84.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $22,785, and the median income for a family is $29,375. Males have a median income of $26,479 versus $18,138 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,235. 22.1% of the population and 20.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.5% are under the age of 18 and 15.2% are 65 or older.
