Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 22.9 km² (8.8 mi²). 22.1 km² (8.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.40% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,138 people, 2,233 households, and 1,699 families residing in the town. The population density is 277.8/km² (719.6/mi²). There are 2,295 housing units at an average density of 103.9/km² (269.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.27% White, 0.39% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 0.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
