Mercer County, West Virginia

Mercer County is a county located in the State of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 62,980. Its county seat is Princeton6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,090 km² (421 mi²). 1,089 km² (420 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.06% water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 62,980 people, 26,509 households, and 17,946 families residing in the county. The population density is 58/km² (150/mi²). There are 30,143 housing units at an average density of 28/km² (72/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.56% White, 5.82% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 0.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 26,509 households out of which 26.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.00% are married couples living together, 11.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.30% are non-families. 28.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.85.

In the county, the population is spread out with 21.10% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 25.50% from 45 to 64, and 17.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $26,628, and the median income for a family is $33,524. Males have a median income of $29,243 versus $19,013 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,564. 19.70% of the population and 14.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.90% are under the age of 18 and 12.70% are 65 or older.
