Mercer County, Ohio

Mercer County is a county located in the U.S. State of Ohio. As of 2000, the population is 40,924. Its county seat is Celina6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,226 km² (473 mi²). 1,200 km² (463 mi²) of it is land and 26 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.12% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 40,924 people, 14,756 households, and 11,022 families residing in the county. The population density is 34/km² (88/mi²). There are 15,875 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (34/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.44% White, 0.10% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. 1.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,756 households out of which 37.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.10% are married couples living together, 7.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.30% are non-families. 22.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.24.

In the county, the population is spread out with 29.60% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 26.70% from 25 to 44, 21.20% from 45 to 64, and 14.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 99.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $42,742, and the median income for a family is $50,157. Males have a median income of $35,508 versus $22,857 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,531. 6.40% of the population and 4.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 6.90% are under the age of 18 and 7.80% are 65 or older.
