Menominee County, Michigan

Menominee County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 25,326. Its county seat is Menominee6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,465 km² (1,338 mi²). 2,703 km² (1,044 mi²) of it is land and 763 km² (294 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 22.01% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 25,326 people, 10,529 households, and 7,001 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km² (24/mi²). There are 13,639 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.24% White, 0.10% African American, 2.27% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,529 households out of which 28.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.80% are married couples living together, 8.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.50% are non-families. 29.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.00% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64, and 17.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 98.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,888, and the median income for a family is $40,268. Males have a median income of $31,975 versus $21,837 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,909. 11.50% of the population and 8.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.60% are under the age of 18 and 11.10% are 65 or older.
